# What’s in a size?

What does a bra size actually mean? How do we figure it out? Is it really that complicated? I’m going to try and break it down;

First rule.

You need both the letter and number to get a size. You cannot have one without the other, it would be like saying “ooh that dress cost me 34”  34 What? Pounds, pence, magic beans?! It doesn’t work. Think of them like all great pairings; Morecambe & Wise, fish & chips, gin & tonic… You get the idea, they need each other to work!

Here is what most people do when they think they need a bigger size bra;

They go up in size, which is right isn’t it? Well no actually it’s probably not, by changing it like this you’re making the band and cup bigger because a bra size works on ratio, simply put, it’s the difference between your band measurement and your bust measurement that determines your size.  Band measurements go up in equal numbers. E.g;

28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46

You should choose the closest one to what your measuring tape says, if your number is odd then pick the one that feels best.

Cup sizes go up in letters. E.G;

A, B, C, D, DD, E, F, FF, G, H, HH, J, JJ, K

The cup increases with every inch bigger the bust measures to the rib but it doesn’t take in to consideration fullness or shape etc (which is why you need me 😉)

This is how to increase the cup size;

Keep the number exactly the same and increase the letter. No support lost but more space for your boobs.

To increase the band size only;

This doesn’t alter the cup volume but makes your band bigger.

If you’re still struggling to get your head around it, have a look at this diagram about bust to band ratios;

See the relation they have? This is why you need the number! Now you can see why there’s no such thing as a D cup. Its all relative.

Does this help? Are you still confused? Let me know 😘

1. After years of nursing babies, my breasts are small and flat on top. It’s like they “sank”. How do I get measured to have something that fits properly? I’ve 36B’s and 34A’s in my drawer mostly, and neither of them are comfortable lol.
